If there’s a major hair moment, it’s right to assume Halle Berry is never too far removed. There was her spiky, X-Men pixie in 2000 and the era-defining, feathered one she wore when she collected the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002. Sprinkle in her choppy blunt bob in 2021 and you have the makings of a well-versed hair anthology. Most recently – like, last week – she joined the flipped bob (aka, the Fob) brigade.

“Knowing that Halle was doing a Bond tribute is where we started reference-wise,” her frequent collaborator and hairstylist David Stanwell describes. “We had a couple of ideas floating around, but after the final fitting we landed on the sleek, flipped-out hairstyle. Because Bond has been a constant through so many decades, we looked back at styles from both the ’60s and the ’90s.” How did he get it so sleek, though? A blend of the Olaplex No 10 Bond Shape Curl Defining Gel and No 7 Bonding Oil. “It creates a gel-like serum that creates a wet-look effect,” he says, explaining that he combed the mixture through, section by section, until the hair was entirely coated. “Once it’s brushed and sculpted, just leave it to set!”

Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner has experimented with a number of bobs of late, from old Hollywood and Marilyn-inspired to tousled, brunette and piecey. Her flipped-out iteration is decidedly sleeker, with less volume, a simple centre-part and straight lines – ending, natch, in a flip. “For the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, Kendall wanted to embrace her shorter length and wear her hair down,” her hairstylist Tamás Tüzes shared with British Vogue. “I started by wetting her hair down and parting it in the middle. Then, I blow-dried it with a round brush, directing the ends forward while keeping the roots flat,” he says. This is what avoids adding too much volume to the root and changing the look. After that, Tüzes took a one-inch curling iron and used it to create a soft bend to the ends of the hair (the “flip”) and a “delicate wave” at the front.

To call Gigi Hadid the bastion of all things bob is hyperbole. But, she has been a paid-up member of the bob club for a fair while, experimenting with icy silver-toned bobs, slicked-back bobs and tousled, textured bobs. Now, she’s embraced the Fob. Posing for a picture taken by her hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos on a Guest In Residence shoot (Hadid’s luxury cashmere clothing brand), her bob is flipped over with kicked-out ends.
